The Maryville Alcoa Flying Dolphins award a $1,000 scholarship to a swimmer, age 12-18 years, to honor Jake Thomas, a young MAFD swimmer who died suddenly a few years ago.  The money is intended to go towards the Awardees college education.  Swimmers must apply for this.  The coach or Team Rep does not.

JAKE THOMAS SCHOLARSHIP GUIDELINES

Information:

The Jake Thomas Scholarship (“JTS”) is a $1,000 scholarship, which will be awarded at the Smoky

Mountain Invitational to one swimmer who best demonstrates motivating his or her teammates to enjoy

their swim team experience. The scholarship is a one-time award and is not renewable. A check for the

total amount of the scholarship will be paid directly to the scholarship award winner’s education fund. If

the award winner does not have an education fund, the award winner will have thirty (30) days from the

date of the Smoky Mountain Invitational to create such a fund.

Eligibility:

Applicants must:

• Be a Greater Knoxville Area Interclub Swimming Association (“GKAISA”) active participant in

good standing.

• Between the ages of 12-18 who has been swimming for his or her swim team for at least four (4)

years.

Criteria:

This scholarship award is intended for a swimmer who has demonstrated faithful and consistent active

participation in their GKAISA swim team for a minimum of four years.

The applicant should:

• Have participated four years for the same GKAISA team and be between the ages of 12 and 18.

• Have continually demonstrated team spirit and motivated others to do their best for their team.

• Have continually been faithful in attendance at practice and at swim meets.

• Continually exhibited a strong character, leadership, sportsmanship, and team spirit.

• Have related well with and be held in high regard by his/her league, coaches, teammates, officials,

volunteers, and parents.

Judging:

A panel of four judges will review scholarship applicants. The panel will read through all submissions and

select the three best candidates. The application and supporting materials for the top three candidates will

be presented to the Thomas Family who will read through the finalists and select the candidate who best

epitomizes the spirit and motivation that Jake Thomas brought to his family, teammates, and team.

Application Process:

Scholarship applications may be obtained through the Team Representative or printed from the MAFD

website.

The deadline for scholarship applications is June 28. Complete applications must be returned to Swim and

Tri via email ([email protected]) or physical address: 5905 Kingston Pike Knoxville, TN 37919.

Award Date:

The scholarship winner will be announced at the Smoky Mountain Invitational on July 10, 2011. At that

time, the winner will receive instruction on how to claim the scholarship. The winner has until August 31,

2011 to accept the scholarship. If the scholarship recipient fails to claim the scholarship by that date, JTS

reserves the right to rescind the scholarship offer and ward the scholarship to another finalist.

 

To apply for the scholarship, please go to the Smoky Mountain Invitational website found on the GKAISA.org website, and attach the following items to it:

 

1. A detailed summary of your participation in your GKAISA summer team during   the past four years. Include dual meet and Championship Meet attendance.

2. A copy of your school transcripts.

3. A short essay (250-500 words) stating why you believe you should be considered for this scholarship award and what you’ve gained from your participation on your swim team.
