What is the Smoky Mountain Invitational Meet?
The Smoky Mountain Invitational Meet is a 2-day (Saturday & Sunday) regional meet with about 1600 swimmers and 30 teams competing. This swim meet is the largest outdoor swim meet in the United States and gets larger and larger every year! The event is always on a Saturday and Sunday in July, with kids 11 & up swimming on Saturday and 10 & unders swimming on Sunday. And this year's meet, on July 13th and 14th, will be the 40th anniversary!!
This meet is for summer league swimmers only. A year-round swimmer who has competed in a USA sanctioned meet after Aug 1 of the previous year meet is ineligible to swim in this meet. The meet is held at the Maryville-Alcoa Flying Dolphins pool near the airport. Regional meets, like this one, have more heats and more events than a regular dual meet - and the swimming starts early in the morning and events run all day until about dinner time. (Check the GKAISA Meet Info Quick Chart on the WCST website's Team Manual section for event order, scoring, etc. for this meet.)
Kids who swim in this meet have a blast! It's a chance to hang out with friends from other swim teams and to swim against some of the best summer swimmers in the region - all at one meet. WCST, like other teams, will have a very large tent set up on the lawn at the pool where parents and swimmers can relax when they are not swimming. WCST also coordinates a potluck lunch that will be served under the tent. There is also an adjacent pool with a slide that swimmers and siblings can play in at the meet - for a small fee - throughout the day. Concessions serving hot food are also available at the pool as well as vendor tents selling t-shirts and swim gear.
