WCST - Tips and Info for the GKAISA City Championship Meet
Here are things you need to know for the GKAISA City Championship Meet - sorry, it's a long list for these big meets:
- The City Meet is held at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center on the UT Campus, 2200 Andy Holt Blvd. It takes about 20 minutes to get there from Whittington Creek.
- Parking is available in the parking garage across the street. Parking passes must be purchased each day from the Aquatic Center Office for $5. Metered parking is also available on various streets in the area of AJAC.
- Our tent will be in the grassy area in front of the Allan Jones building - check the map attached to this email. Bring camping chairs, blankets, small coolers, towels, swimsuit, goggles, sharpies, highlighter, money, sunscreen, bug spray, and dry clothes. Optional items: deck of cards, games, electronic devices. There are no electrical outlets available.
- Swimmers should be under our tent dressed and ready to swim by 7:35am each Prelim day for our assigned warmups time slot at 7:55am. Finals warmups are at 7:40am - so swimmers should be under the tent by 7:20 on Sunday. Meet will start promptly at 9:00am. All days events last until around 3:00pm according to the meet schedule - but these times are approximate and may vary.
- City Meet Volunteers will be called to report to a short meeting at the Girls Clerk of Course Tent behind the building. 1st shift workers meeting is at 8:20am before the meet. 2nd shift workers meeting is at 10:45am and 3rd shift workers meeting is at 12:45pm. Please be on time for your shift so that we do not get penalized with a points deduction or charged a fee.
- The WCST event list by swimmer will be posted in our tent - but you'll need to purchase a Heat Sheet ($10) at the Aquatic Center Office to find out what time your event heat is expected to swim. It is also helpful to bring a highlighter to mark your races in your heat sheet. Please note that heat sheet sales defray the cost of renting the pool, hiring lifeguards, security, etc.
- There are NO event cards for this race. Announcements are made over the loudspeaker and on a radio channel throughout the day for swimmers to report to the Clerk of Course Tents behind the AJAC building. They usually make a 1st, 2nd and 3rd call for each event. Please listen carefully so that your swimmer doesn't miss their event. Swimmers are seated in chairs according to heat and escorted to the chairs behind the blocks when it is time for them to race. Only swimmers, coaches and workers are allowed under the Clerk of Course Tent and on the pool deck.
- Parents watch all races from the bleachers inside the Aquatic Center. The boys will swim in the pool closest to the scoreboard. Girls swim in the middle pool - and the diving well pool is used by swimmers to warm up before races.
- CIty Meet is a timed race with circle-seeded Prelims on Friday and Saturday - meaning each heat is seeded by time except for the last 3 heats in each event - where the top 24 seeded swimmers swim in the middle lanes of those last 3. But any swimmer from any heat has a chance to make it to Finals Day on Sunday - it is all about times, not heats - so swimmers need to swim their fastest! Heat winner ribbons are also handed out for the fastest in each prelim heat and are usually good for a free ice cream from one of the meet sponsors :)
- The Finals session on Sunday will be swum as two heats, Consolation and Final, for each event. The eight fastest times in each preliminary event will qualify to swim that event in Finals. The ninth through sixteenth fastest times in each preliminary event will qualify to swim that event in the Consolation finals. The seventeenth and eighteenth fastest times in each preliminary will be listed as alternates in the heat sheet for Finals. For Finals session, alternates should report to the Clerk of Course when each event is called.
- Medals are awarded to the top 8 places and ribbons awarded to 9th - 16th place - all earn points for the team. Trophies are awarded to the top 5 teams immediately following the conclusion of Finals. Any medals or ribbons won by WCST swimmers will be given out at the end-of-season party.
- WCST coaches will be stationed along the sides of each pool keeping times on stopwatches and watching races all day. Swimmers are asked to check-in with coaches after each of their races.
- Results from each event are posted on bulletin boards in the hallway behind the bleachers throughout the day. Real time results for the entire meet are posted on the GKAISA website under the Links section.
- WCST has a potluck snack table under our tent consisting of breakfast, coffee, drinks and snack food items. Please log on to the website and click on "Calendar" and then hit the V button on your City Meet day to sign up - thank you!!
- The Allan Jones concession stand will serve the usual fare - hot dogs, nachos, pretzels, etc. - or you may leave the pool and go get lunch at any restaurant on Kingston Pike/Cumberland Avenue nearby. Just be sure to be back in time to swim - times listed on the heat sheet are only approximate times!
- Vendors will be at the pool selling t-shirts, goggles, swimsuits and other gear.
- City Meet is inside!! You'll only need rain gear to get from your car to the tent and into the pool - if rain is in the forecast.
- Smoking and alcoholic beverages are prohibited in the pool area at all GKAISA meets.
- Consult the WCST website's FAQ page for more great info!
See you at the pool! GO CROCS!!
