WCST - Tips & Info for GKAISA City Championship Meet 7/28-30
Here are things you need to know for the GKAISA City Championship Meet - sorry, it's a long list for these big meets:
- The GKAISA City Championship Meet is held at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center on the UT Campus, 2200 Andy Holt Blvd. It takes about 20 minutes to get there from Whittington Creek.
- Parking: at a city street meter on Volunteer Blvd (if you can find one) - but not at any on-campus parking locations - you will be ticketed by UT!! Free Parking is located at the Metron/Kingston Building next to Tyson Park (2309 Kingston Pike.) approximately one mile from the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center. Shuttle buses will be provided from 7:00 a.m. until the end of the meet between parking and the pool. Swimmers and their families will have unlimited use of the shuttle service throughout the weekend. There will be two designated unloading stops near the team tents. In order to minimize waiting for shuttle busses at the parking lot on Friday, it is strongly recommended that cars unload passengers, coolers, and any other needed gear at the drop off areas near the pool and then go park and board the shuttle bus. On Saturday and Sunday, this is also recommended as long as children who are dropped off are left with a responsible adult.
- Drop-off and Unloading will take place in two areas: 1) SAC Tents: right lane of Andy Holt Avenue in front of the Student Aquatic Center will be used for unloading. NO PARKING or leaving the car will be permitted there. 2) AJAC Tents: turn onto UT Drive and use the lane for loading/unloading. ABSOLUTELY NO UNLOADING in front of the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center. The street is not wide enough and officers will write tickets to persons who block traffic by stopping there. UT Drive will be open all day for loading and unloading. The shuttle will also stop here.
- WCST Tent will be in the grassy area in front of the Allan Jones building. Bring camping chairs, blankets, small coolers, towels, swimsuit, goggles, sharpies, highlighter, money, sunscreen, bug spray, and dry clothes. Optional items: deck of cards, games, electronic devices. There are no electrical outlets available.
- Warmups: Swimmers should be under our tent dressed and ready to swim by 7:40am each Prelim day for our assigned warmups time slot at 7:55am. Finals warmups are at 7:40am - so swimmers should be under the tent by 7:25 on Sunday. Meet will start promptly at 9:00am. Friday events last until around 3:00pm, Saturday events last until around 1:00pm while Sunday lasts until around 4pm according to the meet timeline - but these times are approximate and may vary.
- City Meet Volunteers - All shifts of workers check in at Girls Clerk of Course behind the AJAC to get their pool deck wristbands. 1st shift workers meeting is at 8:20am, 2nd shift workers meeting is at 10:50am and 3rd shift workers meeting is at 12:50pm. Please be on time for your shift so that we do not get penalized with a points deduction or charged a fee!
- WCST event list by swimmer will be posted in our tent - but bring cash to purchase a Heat Sheet ($10-$20) at the Aquatic Center Office to find out what time your event heat is expected to swim. It is also helpful to bring a highlighter to mark your races in your heat sheet. Please note that heat sheet sales defray the cost of renting the pool, hiring lifeguards, security, etc.
- Clerk of Course: There are NO event cards for this race. Announcements are made over the loudspeaker and on the Twitter page throughout the day for swimmers to report to the Clerk of Course Tents behind the AJAC building. They usually make a 1st, 2nd and 3rd call for each event. Please listen carefully so that your swimmer doesn't miss their event. Swimmers are seated in chairs according to heat and escorted to the chairs behind the blocks when it is time for them to race.
- Official Twitter page is GKAISACITYMEET. Please follow this acct for up-to-date info on important meet announcements and clerk of course calls.
- Parents watch all races from the bleachers inside the Aquatic Center. Only swimmers, coaches and workers are allowed under the Clerk of Course Tent and on the pool deck. The boys will swim in the pool closest to the scoreboard. Girls swim in the middle pool - and the diving well pool is used by swimmers to warm up before races.
- CIty Meet is a timed race with circle-seeded Prelims on Friday and Saturday - meaning each heat is seeded by time except for the last 3 heats in each event - where the top 24 seeded swimmers swim in the middle lanes of those last 3. But any swimmer from any heat has a chance to make it to Finals Day on Sunday - it is all about times, not heats - so swimmers need to swim their fastest! Heat winner ribbons are also handed out for the fastest in each prelim heat and are usually good for a free ice cream from one of the meet sponsors :)
- Finals session on Sunday will be swum as two heats, Consolation and Final, for each event. The eight fastest times in each preliminary event will qualify to swim that event in Finals. The ninth through sixteenth fastest times in each preliminary event will qualify to swim that event in the Consolation finals. The seventeenth and eighteenth fastest times in each preliminary will be listed as alternates in the heat sheet for Finals. For Finals session, alternates should report to the Clerk of Course when each event is called - swimmers sometimes scratch these events giving alternates a chance to swim!
- Medals are awarded to the top 8 places and ribbons awarded to 9th - 16th place - all earn points for the team. Trophies are awarded to the top 5 teams immediately following the conclusion of Finals. Any medals or ribbons won by WCST swimmers will be given out at the end-of-season banquet.
- WCST coaches will be stationed along the sides of each pool keeping times on stopwatches and watching races all day. Swimmers are asked to check-in with coaches after each of their races.
- Results are posted 30 minutes after each event on the AJAC walls in the hallway behind the bleachers throughout the day.
- Potluck snack table under our tent consists of breakfast, drinks and snack food items - and Subway sandwiches will be provided by the team for lunch. Please log on to the website and click on "Calendar" and then hit the V button on your City Meet day to sign up.
- The Allan Jones concession stand will serve the usual fare - hot dogs, nachos, pretzels, etc. - or you may leave the pool and go get lunch at any restaurant on Kingston Pike/Cumberland Avenue nearby. Just be sure to be back in time to swim - times listed on the heat sheet are only approximate times!
- Vendors will be at the pool selling t-shirts, goggles, swimsuits and other gear.
-Our annual carb loading pasta dinner is Saturday night at Bravo's on Bearden Hill at 6:30pm. Please RSVP on our Facebook page with your family's name and number of people attending.
- After Meet Pizza Party at the Whittington Creek Pool on Sunday at 6:30pm. Pizza provided but bring your own drinks - and please RSVP on our Facebook page.
