WCST - Tips and Info for GKAISA City Meet this weekend July 27-29th

Here are things you need to know for the GKAISA City Championship Meet - sorry, it's a long list for these big meets:

    - The GKAISA City Championship Meet is held at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center on the UT Campus, 2200 Andy Holt Blvd. It takes about 20 minutes to get there from Whittington Creek.

    - Parking is free at a city street meter on Volunteer Blvd (if you can find one) - or pay $5 (cash only) to park in the parking garage directly across the street from the pool. If you leave the parking garage and return, you will have to pay $5 each time. Free parking is available at the lot at the Metron Center across Kingston Pike; however, there will not be a shuttle. It is an approximately 1-mile walk. Please note: Parking in any other areas on campus or at the Walmart/Publix lot is not allowed - and you will be ticketed or towed by UT!!

    - Drop-off and Unloading is NOT allowed in front of the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center - Officers will be there directing traffic and will write tickets to persons who block traffic by stopping there.

    - WCST Tent will be in the grassy area in front of the Allan Jones building - see the map on creek.swimtopia.com - Bring camping chairs, blankets, small coolers, towels, swimsuit, goggles, sharpies, highlighter, money, sunscreen, bug spray, and dry clothes. Optional items: deck of cards, games, electronic devices. There are no electrical outlets available.

    - Warmups: City meet warmup times are as follows: Thursday (10&under) 1:20-1:40 pm, be under the tent by 1:00, Friday (11&up) 7:55-8:10am, be under the tent by 7:35, Saturday (finals) 7:25-7:40am, be under the tent by 7:05. The meet starts on Thursday at 3:00pm and at 9 am on Friday and Saturday. The mixed free relays (coed) are the first event.

    - City Meet Volunteers - 1st shift workers need to check in at Girls or Boys Clerk of Course behind the AJAC by 2:10pm on Thurs and 8:10am Fri and Sat to get their pool deck Lanyards and Admit One tickets for all shifts. 2nd and 3rd shift workers arriving after 8am should check in with Raellen Simpson on Thursday and Robin Barre on Friday and Saturday to get your Admit One ticket. All workers enter the pool deck via the Worker Entrance at the back of the pool and should be in place 10 minutes before their shift. Please be on time for your shift so that we do not get penalized with a points deduction or charged a fee!

    - WCST athlete event list by swimmer will be posted in our tent - but you'll need to bring cash to purchase a Heat Sheet ($10) at the Aquatic Center Office to find out what timeyour event heat is expected to swim. It is also helpful to bring a highlighter to mark your races in your heat sheet. Please note that heat sheet sales defray the cost of renting the pool, hiring lifeguards, security, etc.

    - Clerk of Course: There are NO event cards for this race. Announcements are made over the loudspeaker, on the radio station and on the Twitter page throughout the day for swimmers to report to the Clerk of Course Tents behind the AJAC building. They usually make a 1st, 2nd and 3rd call for each event. Please listen carefully so that your swimmer doesn't miss their event. There is a separate Girls and Boys Clerk of Course - go to creek.swimtopia.com to see the map of their locations behind the pool.

    - Meet announcements and clerk of course calls will be broadcasting on Radio Station:88.1FM (we will have a radio in our tent) and on the Official Twitter page GKAISACITYMEET @GKAISA Official. Other City Meet info can be found on their Facebook page: Gkaisa- Greater Knoxville Area Interclub Swimming Assoc and Website: gkaisa.swimtopia.com

    - Parents watch all races from the bleachers inside the Aquatic Center. Only swimmers, coaches and workers are allowed under the Clerk of Course Tent and on the pool deck. This year, the girls will swim in the pool closest to the scoreboard and boys swim in the middle pool - and the diving well pool will be off limits for cool downs/warmups due to preparations for the UT Diving event on Sunday.

    - Swimmers exit the pool from a doorway behind and below the entrance stairwell - so especially for 8&Unders, it's a good idea for a parent/sibling to be waiting there immediately after their races to accompany them safely back to our tent.

    - CIty Meet is a timed race with circle-seeded Prelims on Thursday and Friday - meaning each heat is seeded by time except for the last 3 heats in each event - where the top 24 seeded swimmers swim in the middle lanes of those last 3. But any swimmer from any heat has a chance to make it to Finals Day on Saturday - it is all about times, not heats - so swimmers need to swim their fastest! Heat winner ribbons are also handed out for the fastest in each prelim heat and are usually good for a free ice cream from one of the meet sponsors :)

    - Finals session on Saturday will be swum as two heats, Consolation and Final, for each event. The eight fastest times in each preliminary event will qualify to swim that event in Finals. The ninth through sixteenth fastest times in each preliminary event will qualify to swim that event in the Consolation finals. The seventeenth and eighteenth fastest times in each preliminary will be listed as alternates in the heat sheet for Finals. For Finals session, alternates should report to the Clerk of Course when each event is called - swimmers sometimes scratch these events giving alternates a chance to swim!

    - Medals are awarded to the top 8 places and ribbons awarded to 9th - 16th place - all earn points for the team. Trophies are awarded to the top 5 teams immediately following the conclusion of Finals. Any medals or ribbons won by WCST swimmers will be given out at the end-of-season banquet on August 4th at Calhouns on the River.

    - WCST coaches will be stationed along the sides of each pool keeping times on stopwatches and watching races all day. Swimmers are asked to check-in with coaches after each of their races.

    - Results are posted 30 minutes after each event on the AJAC walls in the hallway behind the bleachers throughout the day and complete daily results should be posted on gkaisa.swimtopia.com under the City Meet tab

    - Potluck snack table on Thursday and Friday under our tent consists of breakfast, drinks and snack food items - and Subway sandwiches will be provided by the team for dinner/lunch. Please log on creek.swimtopia.com to sign up to bring something for your City Meet day. Note: There is no potluck on Saturday - so families should pack their own snacks/drinks or plan to buy food at concessions.

    - The Allan Jones concession stand will serve the usual fare - hot dogs, nachos, pretzels, etc. - or you may leave the pool and go get food at any restaurant on Kingston Pike/Cumberland Avenue nearby. Just be sure to be back in time to swim - times listed on the heat sheet are only approximate times!

    - Vendors will be at the pool selling t-shirts, goggles, swimsuits and other gear.

    - City Meet T-shirts - if you ordered a t-shirt, they will be handed out under our tent with our meet goody bags. If you didn't order one, you can usually buy one from the t-shirt vendor in the AJAC hallway.

-Our annual carb loading pasta dinner is Friday night at Bravo's on Bearden Hill at 6:00pm. Please RSVP on our Facebook page with your family's name and number of people attending by Thursday.

    - End of City Meet Pizza Party at the Whittington Creek Pool on Saturday at 6:00pm.

    - Smoking and alcoholic beverages are prohibited in the pool area at all GKAISA meets.

    - Consult the creek.swimtopia.com under Meets & Events/City Meet for more great info!
